Courtney Breyer
MA, LADC, LPCC
Courtney Breyer is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). Her approach to therapy is relational and client-directed. Courtney has an understanding that good therapy begins with a steadfast relationship between client and provider. She thinks of her profession as walking with clients on their mental health/therapy journey instead of leading or following. Courtney believes it is important to honor the stories a client enters therapy with and respect each person’s timing as they build their internal awareness or make changes. Courtney uses humor and courage to build and maintain connections. She currently works as a therapist with individuals, couples, and families ages 6 and up. Courtney has specialties working with individuals who experience co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)-informed services, and Brainspotting. Whatever is needed, Courtney works with everyone who is willing to show up.
Courtney received her Bachelor of Arts majoring in psychology from St. Olaf College, her Master of Arts in Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, and her certificate in Addiction Counseling from Minneapolis Community and Technical College. She has been providing mental health services since 2016. Courtney has experience working in intensive outpatient co-occurring treatment programs, county-based mental health crisis services, and outpatient psychotherapy.
Techniques Used
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based subtype of CBT that teaches four sets of skills: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Adherent-DBT includes weekly individual therapy, a weekly DBT skills training group, phone coaching between sessions, and weekly therapist consultation groups. While What’s On The Brain? does not provide an adherent DBT program, providers teach and use DBT skills in individual therapy as needed.
- DBT is a powerful therapeutic approach that teaches mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. While we don’t provide a full adherent DBT program, we incorporate DBT skills in individual sessions to meet your needs. Contact us to learn how DBT can support your emotional resilience and personal growth.

- Brainspotting is a brain-based form of therapy that is helpful with addressing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Traumatic memories overwhelm the brain where the brain cannot do its job of processing, organizing, and filing information. Essentially, the traumatic memories get stuck. The brainspotting therapist helps a client’s brain integrate stuck memories by using eye positions and bilateral sounds. Clients have also reported brainspotting helps with other mental health conditions.
- Unlock healing from traumatic memories through Brainspotting, a brain-based therapy especially effective for PTSD. Using specific eye positions and bilateral sounds, Brainspotting helps process and release trauma that may be “stuck” in the brain. Clients also find it beneficial for other mental health conditions. Reach out to see if Brainspotting can support your recovery and mental health journey.
